Burgh Island, pronounced ‘Berg’ Island, is a small 26-acre tidal island located in the South Hams area of South Devon. It has long been a haunt to smugglers, fishermen, the infantry and celebrities alike. It’s located bang slap opposite the small fishing village of Bigbury-on-Sea and you can only access it on foot at low tide.

Burgh Island is an iconic South Devon landmark, located directly opposite Bigbury on Sea beach. The island is accessible at low tide by a strip of sand which at high tide is completely covered, leaving a ride on the unique sea tractor as the only means of access.

There are several buildings on the island, the largest being the Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel. The other buildings are three private houses, and a public house, the Pilchard Inn, run by the hotel. 1/11 The only real disappointment was that although Burgh Island is also known as rabbit island and there were burrows everywhere plus other evidence, we failed to see a single rabbit. We look forward to returning, maybe at Easter.
